Vegan Gravy in a gravy boat

This Vegan Gravy recipe is a must for your holiday meal. Made with veggie broth, nutritional yeast, and miso paste for flavor, seasoned with spices and herbs, and finished with plant based butter, this gravy goes well with so many different dishes. There is a scrumptious mix of umami and savory flavors along with a smooth, silky texture.

Gravy pairs well with many things, including vegetables, bread, potatoes, and grains. This tasty recipe is a delicious substitution for traditional gravy that uses meat drippings because its flavors are complex and layered, thanks to the umami-rich miso paste and soy sauce. All the ingredients work together to make this thick and flavorful Vegan Gravy taste amazing. Let's talk about what you'll be using to make it.

    • Miso Paste. Adds a rich umami flavor.
    • Garlic Powder. Or onion powder.
    • Soy Sauce. Or tamari.
    • Nutritional Yeast. Adds a nice cheesy flavor and a touch of color.
    • Oregano. Or dried thyme.
    • Plant-based butter. Adds a smooth, silky finish.

Tips for the best Vegan Gravy

    • Brown the flour. This step not only adds flavor to the gravy, but it also gets rid of that raw flour taste.
    • Stir often. Stirring throughout the cooking process is crucial to getting rid of lumps from the flour as well as keeping the gravy from burning on the bottom of the pot as it thickens.
    • Give it time to thicken. This Vegan Gravy will need a few minutes to thicken as you stir it over the heat. Don't rush it unless you like your gravy on the thin side. You'll be rewarded for your patience.
    • Add plant based butter. This ingredient adds a silkiness to the gravy that tastes delicious. It also makes it taste a little richer and has that distinct buttery flavor.

    Add-ins and Substitutes

    • Add onion. If you like your gravy with a heavier onion flavor, saute some diced onion and add it to the gravy. You can also use onion powder in place of the garlic powder.
    • Substitute different seasonings. Besides oregano, you could also use thyme, rosemary, sage, poultry seasoning, or parsley.
    • Add mushrooms. This Vegan Gravy would taste amazing with porcini or shiitake mushrooms cooked into it. The earthiness of the mushrooms would add a lot of flavor.
    • Make it gluten-free. You can serve this to anyone not eating gluten by substituting the flour for gluten-free flour, and using a tamari or gluten-free soy sauce.

    How to Store

Store this Vegan Gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. If you would like to freeze it, allow it to cool and then pour it into a ziplock bag to freeze flat before storing upright to save room. You can also freeze this gravy in ice cube trays and store the cubes in a ziplock bag so you will only defrost what you need. The gravy will last for up to 3 months.

    What to Serve with it

    • Main dish. Serve this delicious gravy with Roasted Curried Cauliflower, Whole Roasted Cabbage, or Baked Portobello Steaks.
    • Bread. Cornbread, toasted baguette slices, and brioche bread can be drizzled with this gravy or used to clean the plate.
    • Potatoes. Add this Vegan Gravy to Garlic Smashed Potatoes, Vegan Scalloped Potatoes, Best Vegan Mashed Potatoes, or Perfect Baked Potatoes.
    • Vegetables. You can also serve this gravy with Roasted Cabbage Steaks, Vegan Stuffed Peppers, and Simple Roasted Broccoli.
